Using data from the 2005 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), the authors examined geographic variation in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and the extent to which multilevel social determinants of health explain its use in California, the most racially/ethnically diverse state in the United States.

Their research confirmed that individual-level factors (e.g., race/ethnicity, income, insurance) were strong predictors and found that area-level healthcare resources were associated with CRC screening.
