California ranked 41st out of 50 states in promoting the well-being of its 9.3 million children, according to a report card published by the national child advocacy organization Children Now. The report makes extensive use of Center research as well as data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) to justify the dismal grade. For example, California children scored high on number of hours watching TV and low on time since their last dental visit. Out of 28 categories related to children's education, health and welfare, the state earned D grades in half, and Cs in about a third. The highest grades — B+s — were for summer and after-school learning programs and health insurance coverage.
