Abstract

Los Angeles has a large, densely populated, racially and ethnically diverse county with considerable income variation among 10 million residents, which has contributed to its fragmented health care market. Many of the county's hospital systems, physician organizations, and community clinic organizations tend to serve distinct areas where residents live and work, rather than a few provider organizations serving the whole market.

This study, which uses estimates from the 2014 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) estimates for demographics and 2011-2012 CHIS for the percentage of people uninsured, largely focuses on the core Los Angeles HSA, which is home to a subset of 16 hospitals including nationally renowned academic medical centers (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California, Los Angeles [UCLA]), Kaiser Permanente, community hospitals, and public and private safety-net hospitals that serve many Medi-Cal and uninsured patients.
