Funding available to research asthma and obesity
While studies show that obese people are two to three times more likely to have asthma that overweight people, the reason is unclear. The National Institutes of Nursing Research (NINR) is requesting grant proposals from organizations interested in investigating the linkages betwen asthma and obesity, especially in early life.  Proposals are due on September 5, 2011.
Areas of research include:
  • Examining potential molecular pathways linking asthma and obesity, including a possible common etiology.
  • Examining environmental factors, including built environments,  diet, macro and micronutrient availability, total caloric intake, that may  trigger, modulate or play permissive roles in the development of  asthma and/or obesity.
  • Determining the possible associations between asthma and lack of physical activity.
  • Examine possible associations/ interactions between asthma, sleep disorders, and obesity
