Fund launched as part of the Center's 20th Anniversary celebration
The E. Richard Brown Health Policy Impact Fund will be launched October 7 as part of the 20th Anniversary of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. Tickets to the Gala can be purchased here.

The fund is named for the Center’s late founding director, E. Richard “Rick” Brown, distinguished professor and dedicated health policy advocate on state and national stages, who championed the elimination of health disparities and the expansion of health coverage for the uninsured.

The fund will enhance the Center’s ability to quickly compile and analyze urgent but unfunded requests for health data from policymakers and others.

Examples of "rapid-response" research include:

  • Estimating the number of Californians who can afford premiums in 2015 under various scenarios for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein's Senate Bill 2908, which would amend the IRS code to expand eligibility for premium subsidies under qualified health plans.
  • Calculating the number of Californians without insurance for the offices of former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former State Senator Sheila Kuehl for state health reform legislation.
  • Providing figures on the state's undocumented to the Legislative Analyst's Office for discussions on State Senator Ricardo Lara's immigration reform bill.
  • Providing county enrollment estimates of the uninsured who would be eligible for expanded Medi-Cal and individual market subsidies to advocates such as Health Access of California prior to ACA passage, which helped San Joaquin Valley legislators decide how to vote on the Senate version of the health care bill in U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Estimating the impact of the advance premium tax credits on uninsured and individually insured people in preparation for the vote on the House bill for Rep. Henry Waxman and the House Energy and Commerce staff.
