"I can think of no other Web statistical tool that has been used so much and by so many," said Ninez Ponce, the principal investigator for the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) and an associate director of the Center. "This is an extraordinary milestone for the Center and for the goal of making health statistics understandable and usable for the widest possible audience."

AskCHIS was created to enable users of all skill levels to quickly and easily access health statistics from CHIS, the largest state health survey in the United States. The tool's simple three-step process makes it easy for anyone to access health information for California, their region, county and some districts within counties.

Recently, the Center released a complimentary Web tool, AskCHIS Neighborhood Edition (NE), which lets users drill down even further to the ZIP code level.

Created in 2003, AskCHIS is rated one of the top 50 health data sources in the country by the Health Data Consortium. More than 43,000 people are registered AskCHIS users, and the survey and tool are critical sources of data on Californians as well as on the state's various racial and ethnic groups. Policymakers, researchers, health experts, members of the media and others depend on CHIS for credible and comprehensive information on the health of Californians.
