Adult Mental Health Needs in California

This report and related fact sheet provides some of the first comprehensive data ever collected on the mental health of California's adult population. It finds that nearly 2 million adults in California, about 8 percent of the population, need mental health treatment and that one in 12 Californians reported symptoms consistent with serious psychological distress and experienced difficulty functioning at home or at work. The report also details the inadequate treatment received by adults with mental health needs as well as mental health trends related to insurance status, demographics, immigrant status, race/ethnicity, sexual identity and chronic health conditions, among other topics. 
It is hoped that the data in these publications will enable policymakers and providers to strategically target programs and services to populations most in need.
