Sexual Minorities

Evidence-based research on lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) Americans is rare because so little population data exists. The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), conducted by the Center, is one of the few comprehensive sources of health and other data on sexual minorities. Center research includes studies of older LGBs, suicide among LGBs, intimate partner violence, and more. Center LGB data have been used widely by the nation’s leading health and rights groups in efforts to repeal Proposition 8, promote spousal rights, and examine critical health issues affecting LGBs, including cancer, access to health insurance, and the prevalence of chronic conditions. A 2011 report on the health of sexual minorities by The National Academy of Sciences described CHIS as a national model for data collection for this underrepresented group.
