Adult Medi-Cal Enrollment Surges, Uninsured Rate Plummets in 2014

August 18, 2015

Fact Sheet

Author: Shana Charles, PhD, MPP

This fact sheet uses data from the 2014 California Health Interview Survey to show the statewide impact of major health insurance expansions under the Affordable Care Act. The data show that nearly one in five (19.2 percent) adults ages 19-64 were enrolled in Medi-Cal in 2014, compared to 12.9 percent in the previous year. As Medi-Cal enrollment grew, the rate of uninsured adults fell by more than three percentage points, to 17.4 percent. Overall, the uninsured rate declined to a new low of 13.6 percent among all nonelderly Californians.
