CHIS Making an Impact - 2016

December 9, 2016

Fact Sheet

Author: UCLA Center for Health Policy Research

The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), the nation’s largest state health survey, continued to play a significant role in shaping health policies and guidelines of state and national importance in 2016. Examples include providing background data to Sen. Dianne Feinstein's office on state and national health premium affordability using CalSIM; providing supporting evidence for state Senate analysis of a new state law that requires Department of Health Care Services to determine how best to offer medical interpretation services for Medi-Cal patients with minimal English proficiency; and informing research on the impact of the Affordable Care Act.

This fact sheet gives an overview of legislation, training, government studies, health advocacy group publications, and policy reports and journal articles by Center researchers and other academic researchers that used CHIS data in 2016.

Since 2003, more than 56,700 registered AskCHIS users have made 1.1 million queries, and more than 41,892 public use data files have been downloaded. AskCHIS and AskCHIS NE users made more than 130,000 queries in 2016, proving the value of CHIS data to those passionate about understanding and improving public health and reducing health disparities.
