Policy Brief
This policy brief examines geographic disparities in rates of potentially preventable hospitalizations and emergency department visits among adults ages 18 and older by Service Planning Areas (SPA) in Los Angeles County from 2016 to 2021. Authors look at three combinations of conditions that are typically preventable, given appropriate disease management: all conditions, chronic conditions, and diabetes-related conditions.

Policy Brief
Using the 2014–2019 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) combined adult data and existing state, county, and city tobacco control policies and neighborhood-level data on social drivers of health, this brief examines variations in local tobacco policies and their relationship with smoking behaviors, particularly among priority populations disproportionately impacted by tobacco.

Journal Article
Using 2015–2018 California Health Interview Survey data, authors evaluated the health and economic impacts of work loss due to sickness associated with daily all-source and wildfire-specific particulate matter exposures in California.

Journal Article
Authors aimed to study the association of short-term daily total particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure with work loss due to sickness among adults living in California. They used 2015 to 2018 California Health Interview Survey data (CHIS) on adults in the workforce living in California.

Journal Article

Summary: Type 2 diabetes has raised great public health concerns due to its association with the increased risk of several adverse health outcomes. Authors aimed to investigate the association of criteria air pollutants and traffic density with the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and antidiabetic medication use in California.

Journal Article
Since 2016, California has implemented a series of policies, including prohibiting the sale of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to persons under 21, cigarette tax increase, and recreational marijuana legalization. The study aims to examine the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and marijuana among young adults (ages 18–25) and their associations with other factors in the context of these policy changes.

Journal Article
This study examines whether the “Emission Reduction Plan for Ports and Goods Movement” in California reduced air pollution exposures and emergency room visits among California Medicaid enrollees with asthma and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Authors created a retrospective cohort of 5,608 Medicaid enrollees from ten counties in California with data from 2004 to 2010.

Summary: Outdoor air pollution, including ozone (O3) pollution, and childhood family environments may interact and impact asthma exacerbations in children. Previous epidemiology studies have primarily focused on stress in the home, rather than support, and whether psychosocial factors modify the association between pollution and health outcomes, rather than whether pollution exposure modifies associations between psychosocial factors and health outcomes.

Journal Article
The impacts of air pollution on public health have become a great concern worldwide. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5μm (PM2.5), either from conventional sources such as traffic emissions or wildfire smoke, is among the most damaging air pollutant and has been documented to cause both acute and chronic diseases and their exacerbations. Owing to increasing economic activities, consumption of natural gases, and wildfires, the concentration of PM2.

Researchers examine the impact of the 2006 California Goods Movement Plan on air quality and health care utilization among adults with chronic health conditions who were enrolled in California’s healthcare program for low-income individuals (Medi-Cal). The study was funded as part of HEI’s Accountability Research program, which evaluates the effectiveness of air quality interventions.
