Journal Article
Active smokers with asthma have a higher risk of asthma episodes compared to nonsmokers. Exposure to marijuana smoke or using e-cigarettes may also increase the frequency of these episodes in individuals with asthma. The association between these factors and asthma attacks may vary based on self-reported gender.

Journal Article
Outdoor air pollution, including ozone (O3) pollution, and childhood family environments may interact and impact asthma exacerbations in children. Authors study whether pollution exposure modifies associations between psychosocial factors and health outcomes.

Journal Article
This study aimed to assess the relationship between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, as well as tobacco use (cigarette and electronic cigarettes), on asthma severity among adults with current asthma, with stratification by sex to understand potential biological sex differences.

Journal Article
In this study, authors specifically focused on whether food insecurity can lead to delay in prescription medication for adults with asthma in California for adults.

Policy Brief
Secondhand smoke is dangerous to a person’s health at any level of exposure. Yet policies that prevent smoking are not in place for a majority of market-rate multi-unit housing complexes, according to this survey of nearly 1,000 apartment dwellers in the city of Los Angeles. Approximately 37 percent of respondents reported that secondhand smoke had drifted into their apartments in the past year.

Journal Article
Using data from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey, the authors examined the incidence, characteristics of asthma morbidity and care, and ethnic differences that exist in older adults with asthma in California. Characteristics of older adults (65 years and older) with and without asthma were compared using population-weighted estimates. Asthma-specific variables were compared among different ethnic groups.

Research Report
This two-year study identified sub-populations (e.g., low-income, children, the elderly, rural/urban residents, and ethnic minorities) that have higher exposures to a single pollutant or pollutant mixes, and/or potentially greater vulnerability to these exposures.

Journal Article
Recent research suggests the burden of childhood asthma attributable to air pollution has been underestimated in traditional risk assessments, and there are no estimates of these associated costs.
