This study seeks to use variation 'deportation threat; as measured by the rollout of the Secure Communities and 287 (g) to examine the relationship between deportation threat and infant birthweight among women in California, including women who are undocumented.
In addition to CHIS public and restricted data, we plan to use county-level demographics, and data from Secure Communities to construct measures of deportation threat. Our study examines the periods between 2003 and 2012, allowing for a baseline of births prior to implementation of Secure Communities and for several after its imposition. Our analytic approach allows us to use nuanced measures of deportation threat, over time and place to capture changes in policies, and immigration enforcement intensity, and isolate the effects of deportation threat on families most likely to be intimately affected—undocumented mothers and their infants.
