Summary
Black women have played a significant role in propelling California to become the fourth-largest economy in the world. Yet, federal proposals to cut essential programs like health coverage and nutrition assistance would disproportionately harm Black women. These cuts compound the systemic racism, economic inequality, and generational trauma that Black women in California face every day.
Authors' analysis explains why these cuts are so dangerous and what’s needed to build a more equitable future for Black women, including:
- Why Black women are more likely to be affected by cuts to health care, SNAP, CalWORKs, and other programs
- How historical and ongoing discrimination shape these outcomes
- What state leaders can do to protect core services
- Why advancing equity must remain a central focus of budget decisions
Data from 2019–2023 California Health Interview Surveys were included in this report.
