Summary
The recent denial of legal recognition for same-sex marriages (SSMs) by the Supreme Court of India has sparked discussions on civil liberties and mental health. In contrast to the legal status in 33 countries, the situation in India prompts reflections on the potential benefits of marriage equality. Global surveys indicate growing support for SSM legalization, highlighting its potential impact on social inclusion, relationship stability, financial resources, and mental health.
Findings: While no evidence suggests worse mental health outcomes for children of same-sex parents, they may encounter challenges linked to societal stigma. In addition, marriage equality for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community could lead to improved economic outcomes and foster a more inclusive society. This article advocates for a holistic approach to address the mental health and overall well-being of the diverse LGBTQIA+ community in India.
