APHA 2010: Health care reform, soda and obesity, Latino health and more are the subject of nearly th

Health care reform. Immigrant health. Lesbian, gay and bisexual health data. Mental health.  These and other urgent health and health policy issues are the subjects of 33 presentations at the 2010 American Public Health Association that feature Center researchers or data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS).

The meeting, taking place Nov. 7-10 in Denver, Colo., is the largest gathering of public health professionals in the nation and provides a first look at new health research by leaders in the field.

Among the presentations are papers or posters on cancer screening, racial and ethnic health disparities, Asian and Pacific Islander health, as well as a special joint presentation by state and national experts on the uses of CHIS data in understanding gay, lesbian and bisexual health.  See all presentations. The meeting will also feature two special Center and CHIS sessions on immigrant health and on the progress made toward a more coordinated system of state and local health surveys nationwide. Specifically:

Session 1:  Health data collection in YOUR state
A panel of state and federal health survey leaders will present the findings from a new study that examines independent local health surveys in 12 states and discuss how these surveys could be coordinated and aggregated to better identify health disparities and monitor the progress of national health care reform. Specifically, the study examined independent surveys in California, Ohio, Arizona, Illinois, Colorado, North Carolina, Iowa, Hawaii, Utah, New Jersey, Missouri and New York City. The panel will also discuss federal legislative efforts to develop a coordinated system of national, state and local health surveys that would be responsive to the needs of health services researchers as well as to federal health policymakers.

Session 2:  Immigrant health
A panel of experts will use data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) to dismantle myths about immigrant health and demonstrate how CHIS’s rich population-based sample can be used to explore differences in health care access and utilization among many immigrant populations. Drawn from the most diverse state in the union, CHIS presents researchers with a unique opportunity to examine health disparities through multiple lenses, including race/ethnicity, geographic, social and economic status.
