The Data Access Center (DAC) based at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research provides services to analyze California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) data in a secure, controlled environment that protects the confidentiality of respondents.
Confidential CHIS files (which include data that are not available in the Public Use Files) are maintained in the DAC and can be used for analysis by submitting a DAC Project Application. Researchers do not receive direct access to confidential CHIS files but submit analysis requests to a CHIS statistician and are returned output by either requesting programming services or submitting code.
Other confidential data available from the DAC include:
- Data Estimate Requests (DER): CHIS data estimates available for nonprofit organizations, government agencies, the media, and other entities interested in specific health issues for non-research purposes.
- Local Health Department (LHD) Files: CHIS data at the county level for California’s public health departments interested in examining the health and wellbeing of its local population.
- Discrimination Module (DM): An instrument that collected data about experiences of unfair treatment from a subset of adult respondents (ages 18+) in CHIS 2007 and 2009.
