High Rates

Summary

Published Date: April 01, 2023

In this publication, authors discuss the role of genocidal policies and systemic racism in creating missing generations and premature aging, which lead to a healthcare infrastructure that is not designed to support the consequences of these policies and their health effects.  While acknowledging the systemic healthcare challenges that Native Americans face, authors also focus on the critical role that Native American health services, such as Riverside San Bernadino Counties Indian Health Inc., play in ameliorating high rates. The publication is an outcome of the community-engaged project Chihuum Piiuywmk Inach/A Gathering of Good Minds led to the creation of the Historical Wisdom podcast: https://gogm.live/podcast.

This comic-strip style illustration depicts a podcast by Juliet McMullin interviewing Center Faculty Associate Delight Satter about the high rates of chronic disease doctors witness when working at Indian Health clinics. Satter states Native American patient populations have higher rates for chronic disease compared to other populations.
