Summary
This journal article uses data from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) to examine disparities between Korean-American and non-Hispanic White Californians in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, incidence and mortality. The authors also compare CHIS data with data covering the population of South Korea. They find that despite almost identical CRC screening guidelines in South Korea and the USA and substantially higher screening rates among Korean Americans as compared to South Koreans, disparities remain in both populations, when compared with non-Hispanic Whites in California. According to the authors, the adoption of a westernized lifestyle, combined with lower screening rates, may be responsible for this disparity.
