Summary
This report investigated how three unhealthy behaviors (poor diet, physical inactivity, and tobacco use) contribute to four diseases (vascular disease, cancer, lung disease, and type 2 diabetes) that cause more than 50% of deaths in Santa Barbara County.
Throughout the nation and in Santa Barbara County, the four chronic diseases impact the quality of life and result in premature death for many Santa Barbara County residents. The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department focused its data collection and analysis on three behaviors and four chronic diseases with the scientific understanding that the quality and longevity of life of our residents is greatly influenced by these key factors.
This report includes 2001 to 2011-12 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) data on rates of soda and fast food consumption, physical inactivity, adult obesity, tobacco use, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, households below FPL and health insurance along with other information from other sources to give help build a picture of the community's health status.
