Summary
The California Association of Food Banks is a group of 44 food banks across the state that partners with 6,000 local agencies to serve more than 2 million people a year. The briefing book has data from various sources to illustrate reach of hunger and poverty in the state, including statistics on senior poverty from a February 2016 Center report based on the Elder Index and the cost of chronic disease based on 2011-2012 California Health Interview Survey data in a California Department of Public Health report. Public safety net programs, such as SNAP, CalFresh, and summer food programs, are highlighted as the first line of defense against hunger.
