Summary
Which Asian group is the most likely to be uninsured? Which group is the most impacted by language barriers? For answers to these types of questions, the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) turned to the nation's best data source on Asian American health — CHIS — for its National Healthcare Disparities Report.
The report provides in-depth information on the health of the nation's racial and ethnic groups. The congressionally-mandated report, which AHRQ has produced annually since 2003, is based on over 40 different national sources that collect data regularly. Using 2009 CHIS data, the report notes that Korean Americans in California were three times more likely than whites to be uninsured in the past year and that Koreans who preferred to speak their native language were seven times as likely as those who preferred to speak English to be uninsured. The report also includes CHIS data on asthma rates among Asian and Latino subgroups and the race and ethnicity of Californians who used a translator at a doctor's visit.
