This journal article uses data from the 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 California Health Interview Surveys (CHIS) to determine trends in fruit juice and sugary beverage consumption among California Children. The authors compare consumption rates reported by parents in each of the survey years and find that the percentage of children ages 6 to 11 that consume sugary beverages decreased from 40% in 2003 to 16% in 2009, while the percentage of children who consume fruit juice remained level. Unfortunately, fruit juice consumption also increased among younger minority children – an "unintended consequence of efforts to reduce sugar consumption," according to the authors.
