The authors' generalized linear mixed model predicts health outcomes using both individual-level and neighborhood-level predictors. The model’s feature of nonparametric smoothing function on neighborhood-level variables better captures the association between neighborhood environment and the outcome.

Journal Article
Authors tested whether generational status is associated with variations in diabetes processes of care among four generational cohorts of Mexican adults: first generation immigrant (foreign-born); second generation (both parents foreign-born); generation 2.5 (one parent foreign-born, one parent U.S.-born); and third generation (both parents U.S.-born).

Research Report
Using data from the 2012-2013 California Health Interview Survey, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, compared differences in access to care for Medi-Cal enrollees to those with employer-sponsored insurance (ESI). This publication has a companion report by the Urban Institute, Medi-Cal Versus Medicaid in Other States: Comparing Access to Care.

Journal Article
Authors examined obesogenic dietary practices among Latino and Asian subgroups of children living in California, and analyzed 2007, 2009, and 2011-2012 California Health Interview Survey data to examine the differences in dietary practices among Mexican and non-Mexican Latino children and 7 ethnic subgroups of Asian children living in California. Multivariable regression was used to examine the sociodemographic factors associated with specific dietary practices.

Long-term care hospitals are post-acute care facilities for patients requiring extended hospital-level care. These facilities are reimbursed by Medicare under a prospective payment system with a short-stay outlier policy, which results in substantially lower payments for patients discharged before a diagnosis-related group–specific short-stay threshold.

Journal Article
Cross-cultural variability in respondent processing of survey questions may bias results from multiethnic samples. Authors analyzed behavior codes, which identify difficulties in the interactions of respondents and interviewers, from a discrimination module contained within a field test of the 2007 California Health Interview Survey. In all, 553 (English) telephone interviews yielded 13,999 interactions involving 22 items.

Fact Sheet
Based on the study Empowering Choices in Breast Cancer Treatment, this fact sheet reports that one of every five women with early-stage breast cancer does not know whether she is at high or low risk for cancer recurrence, pointing to the need for better communication between doctors and patients about genomic test results. This fact sheet was produced in collaboration with Harvard University’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Aetna.

Journal Article
Although screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) is recommended for all adults aged 50 to 75 years in the United States, there are racial and ethnic disparities in who receives screening. Individuals lacking appropriate CRC screening cite various reasons for nonadherence, including lack of provider recommendation for screening.

As a large population-based health survey of the nation's most diverse state, the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) provides relatively large samples of relatively rare population groups. Despite being the "T" in LGBT, transgender persons have been left out of CHIS and other population-health surveys.
