California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) Race and Ethnicity Updates to the 2025 Survey

PUBLISHED ON:

Overview

This video outlines updates to race and ethnicity data in the 2025 California Health Interview Survey.

In 2024, federal standards for collecting race and ethnicity data were updated under Statistical Policy Directive 15 (SPD 15). At the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), we made it our mission to lead the implementation of these improved standards.

Starting in 2025, CHIS adopted the new SPD 15 guidelines, allowing survey respondents to report their race and subgroup identities more accurately, and enabling us to code that data with far greater precision.

CHIS worked closely with community participants to ensure the data choices reflect people's true identities. This level of granularity helps pinpoint health differences across racial groups, within subgroups of the same race, and among multiracial populations.

This video outlines the processes to help data collectors and data custodians build representation into their work.
