New and Noteworthy Additions to the 2024 CHIS

Enhancements to gender identity questions: With changes implemented on the gender identity questions, CHIS can now produce estimates of detailed subgroups within the transgender and gender expansive population in California. Based on the 2024 CHIS, approximately 394,000 Californians identify with a transgender or gender expansive identity: 69,000 identify as male or female transgender, 273,000 identify as nonbinary, and 52,000 selected “other gender expansive,” which includes those who identify as transgender, agender, and other gender expansive identities that do not fall under the nonbinary umbrella.

New weighting dimension: Limited English Proficiency (LEP) was added as a dimension in the statistical weighting methods to better represent California’s linguistic diversity.

New questions on hate incidents: More detail about hate incidents experienced or witnessed, such as the number of incidents, impact, supports received, and knowledge of the offender were added to the 2024 CHIS.

CHIS 2024 Methodology Reports and Papers

In 2025, CHIS released a series of five methodology reports that provide the most in-depth descriptions of CHIS sampling, data collection, data processing, response rates, and weighting and variance estimation methods.

Explore the five methodology reports for the 2025 CHIS:

Report 1: 2023-2024 Sample Design — provides analysts with information about the sampling methods used for CHIS 2023–2024, including both the household and person (within household) sampling. This report also provides a discussion on achieved sample size and how it compares to the planned sample size.

Report 2: 2023-2024 Data Collection Methods — describes the protocols followed to contact sampled addresses and how data were collected for CHIS 2023–2024, including details on procedures to complete the child and adolescent extended interview and outcomes of sampled addresses and quality control measures.

Report 3: 2023-2024 Data Processing Procedures — describes the data processing and editing procedures for CHIS 2023–2024. The report details the data editing procedures and addresses the steps taken for ensuring data quality, delivery of the final data sets, special procedures of editing and coding of geography and race and ethnicity survey items, and more.

Report 4: 2023-2024 Response Rates — provides analysts with information about the response rates in CHIS 2023–2024, as well as procedures used to increase the response rates.

Report 5: 2023-2024 Weighting and Variance Estimation — describes the weighting and variance estimation methods used in CHIS 2023–2024 and presents the steps used to create the analytical weights for analyzing the data from the adult, child, and adolescent interviews.

Intercoder Reliability Assessment for Questions with “Other-Specify” Responses in CHIS 2024

To examine and improve the reliability of coding for questions with “other specify” responses, CHIS researchers conducted an intercoder reliability assessment, measuring the degree of agreement between different coders when they independently categorize the same set of data using a standardized coding scheme.

Using Visible Cash to Improve Response in the California Health Interview Survey: Evidence from Two Experiments

CHIS has conducted several experiments showing the positive effects of incentives on survey participation since 2019. CHIS 2024 conducted two experiments with the use of a $2 bill visible cash incentive compared with a $2 bill nonvisible cash incentive.

CHIS Data Tools

    AskCHIS™

AskCHIS™ was updated in October 2025 with the full 2024 CHIS data.

As CHIS' most comprehensive tool, AskCHIS™ draws upon the responses of 20,000+ California households interviewed each year and provides data on a wide range of health topics across many sociodemographic factors. Users are able to quickly search for health statistics by county, region, and state.

Currently, there are approximately 24 million+ different CHIS estimates that can be explored in AskCHIS™.

    Public Use Files (PUF)

In 2025, CHIS released several new Public Use Files (PUFs):

    2024 One-Year PUF
One-year PUFs consist of individual records obtained from each survey year (CHIS 2001–2024), contain comprehensive data on a large range of topics at the state level, and include variables that minimize the risk of indirect identification of CHIS respondents.

2024 Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) PUF
The Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Study PUFs contain a set of questions assessing experiences of Californians who have difficulties with certain activities of daily life, such as dressing, bathing, walking, or doing errands. The 2024 LTSS PUF was released in November 2025, adding to the 2019, 2020, and 2023 LTSS PUFs. CHIS has also released revised data for the 2023 LTSS PUF.

    CHIS Data Access Center (DAC)

The CHIS Data Access Center (DAC) provides researchers with the ability to analyze confidential CHIS data while maintaining the data in a secure, controlled environment that protects the confidentiality of respondents.

In 2025, CHIS launched a new DAC Project Depot, where users can browse through previously submitted DAC projects and explore topics of interest, learn about already-conducted research, and get ideas for where new research using CHIS data would be valuable.
